This is one of my all time favourite movies, which is finally available on DVD, with Special Features that are supurb.
Phar Lap, would have to be the greatest racehorse EVER. If not THE best, he is without doubt right up there alongside the top 5 ever in the world. This is his story, and this movie is just beautiful. It captures the essence of the time - Australia in the 1930's perfectly.
The story of Phar is awe inspiring as well as tragic. It also is interesting to note what more this wonderful horse might have acheived had he been trained by Tommy Woodcock and not the selfish and greedy Harry Telford, and if Phar Lap had raced on and not died prematurely.
The music which accompanies the movie is moving and beautiful. A great movie for all the family.
The Special Features on this DVD are fantastic. You hear a very long conversation between the producer and Tommy Woodcock, where Tommy talks about Phar Lap and the key points of his life and times. This is pure magic, as Tommy Woodcock knew the horse better than anyone, and has since died. It's like having Tommy there in your loungeroom talking about what really happened. Tommy says in this commentary that he really liked the movie and thinks it was very true to what really happened. Tommy himself makes an appearance in the movie, as a trainer in the mounting yard prior to the 1931 Melbourne Cup.
The commentary by Tom Burlinson is fantastic and all of the other special features - and there lots of them- are just wonderful. A very special movie about a very very special horse and his beloved friend Tommy which has been beautifully packaged and presented here on this DVD. I thoroughly reccommend it to anyone!!
