The game of Pick Up Sticks is believed to have originated in 12th Century China, sticks were used to make predictions, thrown down on a table and read in a similar way to Rune stones. The name Pick Up Sticks may have come from this children's nursery rhyme:
One, two, buckle my shoe,
Three, four, shut the door
Five, six, pick-up sticks
Seven, eight, lay them straight,
Nine, ten, a big fat hen!
