Dr. Alfred (Fred) Jones (Ewan McGregor), a rather introverted scientist at the Dept of Fisheries and Agriculture suddenly has his world thrown into turmoil thanks to a fly-fishing obsessed Yemeni Sheikh who dreams of achieving the seemingly impossible introducing salmon to the wadis of the Yemen.
With the British government desperate for a good news story in the area the Prime Minister's fearsome spokesperson, Patricia Maxwell (Kristin Scott Thomas) seizes on the idea and appoints the incredulous Dr. Fred to oversee the project one he sees as one step short of madness.
He is eventually won over by the charismatic Sheikh and his representative Harriet Chetwode-Talbot (Emily Blunt). With her encouragement and support, Fred embarks upon a journey of self-discovery and late-blooming love to bring Salmon Fishing to the Yemen.
