Lally tells the story of all she has seen, raising the three white daughters of a formerly powerful but now impoverished family. Nurtured and cared for by both wife Madam and Mamselle the childrens tutor, the tides of change sweep and swirl around them, eating away at the once-solid rock of the white mans dominance and the all-powerful control of the church.
When the three daughters, having left the island, reconvene to shore up what is left of their household, they find an island sultry with the seat of toil, protest, unresolved passion, death and desire. Secrets that have lain suppressed too long are about to be exposed at the Orchid House.
