Written and directed by Nadiene Labaki, this heart-warming modern fable-like film follows Labakis impressive directorial debut Caramel.
Set in a small, isolated Lebanese village, most days a group of Muslim and Christian women gather at the cafe of feisty widow Amal to work on joint projects and share gossip and song. These resourceful women, of all ages, shapes and sizes, are united by their unwavering friendship.
When their village comes under threat from outside religious tensions, the women band together to ingeniously devise a plan to distract their local menfolk. They will try almost every means at their disposal, defying conventions and taboos. As a series of chaotic incidents tests the womens ingenuity, can they manage, with their usual sass, to successfully stave off the fall-out from the distant war and save their community?
Playing with the common observation that if women and mothers in particular ran the world that there would be no more wars, Where Do We Go Now? is an extraordinary inventive, often comical and very affecting piece of cinema.
